let's do this

george will is all upset because, according to him, transportation sec. ray lahood has bought into smart growth, bicycling and transit, and is looking at communist portland as a model. is it true? god i hope so.

our last big federal transportation bill, which expires later this year, "authorized $241 billion for highway spending and $52.6 billion for transit programs . . . roughly an 80/20 split in funding between highways and transit," and (at one point) included funding of over $200 million for the infamous "bridge to nowhere" in alaska, an amount which could have paid in full for bus rapid transit on geary blvd in san francisco (although that bus also goes nowhere (ooooh)).

meanwhile, most americans want more funding for transit, and transit use is at a 5-decade high.
