sup. john avalos has a new plan to stave off muni fare increases . . .
His proposed ''transit justice package'' calls for eliminating early-bird specials and upping charges at city-owned garages; expanding meter enforcement hours to 10 p.m. and to Sundays in certain parts of the city; charging more at downtown parking meters; and adding $5 to parking citations. He also wants to restore cuts to street cleaning, which presumably would generate more revenue from parking tickets given to drivers who don't move their cars when the mechanical sweeper comes through.i hope this goes through. yes, it sucks for drivers, but in this financial situation, dumping the burden of the budget shortfall on those that can (often) least afford it - muni riders - is not right, especially when muni's financial problems seem to be due in part to other agencies raiding its budget.
as usual, the comments on sfgate range from troublingly reactionary to downright batshit crazy.
